Uganda Technical College Lira was founded in 1945 to offer technical training to 2nd world war veterans. It thereafter started admitting primary school leavers a technical school.
In 1972 it was up graded to a technical institute admitting secondary school leavers to pursue craft courses. In October 1983 it was up graded to a technical college admitting secondary school leavers who have completed advanced level education. The college offers 27 diploma and certificate courses in the areas of construction, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, plumbing, carpentry, Painting and Decoration, Brick laying, and computer applications among other courses. The college currently has a student population of 661.
